Bathroom Renovation: Farmhouse Style

Updating my master bathroom has been on my to do list forever, and we finally got around to it! I wanted a new look without spending a fortune or having to spend an extended period of time without a master bathroom, so we opted for a bathroom makeover instead of a full remodeling project. We decided on a new vanity and lots of new decor to make my farmhouse chic dream bathroom come to life in less than a week.

My bathroom was renovated about 10 years ago when we bought our house. At that time we were doing the entire house at once (because it was literally not livable), so we didn’t get to do everything the way we dreamed of… the budget just wouldn’t allow for it. My master bathroom always remained one of those things I would update in the future.

Before Bathroom Renovation - Original Bathroom
I wasn’t kidding that the original bathroom was awful – the house was condemned… it was literally not livable as it was

As much as I’m loving all grey and white these days, I realized that removing all of the stone in our bathroom to change it out was just too much of an undertaking (in terms of time and finances). Instead I opted for making it work! We added shiplap for that farmhouse look I was going for, then painted the all the walls white and found the perfect color wood that would tie in the beige floor with all black and white decor I wanted.

Before we get into all the updates, here are some before pictures….

Now the fun part! Since I received tons of requests for links to items on my Instagram @thetravelingred, I decided to link them all here for you so it’s easy to navigate.

Disclaimer: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a small commission. I purchased all of these items for myself and truly love them, which is why I am sharing them with you, not because of the commission I receive from your purchases.

LINKS TO ITEMS I PURCHASED

Let’s start with the big items, and definitely the most expensive items and then we’ll get into all the decor.

New Vanity, Mirrors & Light Fixtures for our Farmhouse Chic Bathroom Makeover

VANITY: The most expensive item we purchased was the vanity. This was a splurge item, but last time around I made the mistake of buying a really inexpensive one and it quickly fell apart. This time I decided to invest in a good piece so it would last. And honestly I was just in love with it. It was the perfect wood color to tie in the beige floor with the black and white design I was dreaming of. Here is the link to our vanity. The same style comes in several sizes. I went with the Antiqued Grey Oak finish and the Caesarstone Frosty Carrina top. If you want to purchase from RH, it’s worth it to become a member. The membership costs $100 and on this vanity alone I saved over $1,000 by being a member.

MIRRORS: In my heart I wanted wood mirrors to match my vanity, but I knew it would be virtually impossible to find the right color with the right dimensions from a different store. When I came across my mirrors on West Elms website they looked right and I was hopeful, but its so hard to know if they colors would match just from pictures on the internet. I went by the local West Elm store and they didn’t have it or anything in that finish for that matter. And honestly I had never seen my vanity in person either. I decided to take my chances and order them online because they seemed just too perfect. I planned to return them if they didn’t match. The vanity and mirrors arrived the same day and when I put them side by side I couldn’t believe my eyes… they were a perfect match! I ordered the mirrors because of the color, but the truth is that they’re incredibly gorgeous. They’re bulky, heavy and even have a ledge to put things on. They’re amazing pieces and under $200 each (they had a sale when I bought them, and if you sign up for emails they’ll send you a 15% off code). Here is the link to my mirrors.

LIGHT FIXTURES: These were surprisingly super inexpensive! I found the set of 2 on Amazon for under $50 and they look great. The same design is all over the internet for hundreds of dollars each, but there’s no need to spend a lot of money on that. Ours are truly perfect. Here’s the link to the light fixtures.

The rest is really just decor so there isn’t much explanation… I’ll just link them for you one by one.

GET NAKED BATH RUG: It is from Urban Outfitters and comes in other colors as well. Here is the link to the bath rug.

RECLAIMED WOOD LADDER: We purchased a reclaimed wood ladder to use for our towels. I actually decided to leave it just for looks and put the towels I shower with on a hook behind my door because I shower several times a day and I worried that my towel would never dry being folded so tight on the ladder. This ladder can really be used for anything. I purchased the 6 ft size, in the weathered grey finish. Here’s the link to the ladder.

BATHROBE HOOK: I went with a super simple black hook that is perfect for a robe, but honestly I use it to put my towel when I shower. Link to the hook.

FAUCETS: I fell in love with the vintage look of them. We went with brushed nickel to match our fixtures in our shower, but they had several options. Here is the link to the faucets.

GALVANIZED MILK JUG: It’s just a regular milk jug, but I chose to use it as a vase. Here’s the link.

EUCALYPTUS STEMS: This is a pack of stems. 1 pack is enough. I actually didn’t even use them all. Link to artificial eucalyptus.

SPA DAY CANDLE: I honestly only purchased it because of the color and the size to match my decor, but the truth is it smells delicious! Link to the spa day candle.

NEST HAND LOTION: Nest makes my favorite holiday candle of all time, so I was excited to try their hand lotion and it matches perfectly. Link to the hand lotion.

SOAP & WATER SIGN:  I wanted just a simple farmhouse style sign to fill the space and this one was perfect. Link to the sign.

GORGEOUS & HANDSOME PRINTS: I loved what these prints said so I decided to find the perfect size and put them together myself. This is the link to the set of prints.

HAMPER: At first I had a small boring black hamper and hated it. Then I came across my dream hamper on Pinterest. Love Made 14 custom makes hampers and cabinets that are gorgeous. I selected how many bins I wanted, if I wanted a drawer on top or not, the stain color, as well as all of the details for the stenciling on it. The whole process was amazing and I highly recommend their products.

TISSUE BOX: I found the cutest tissue box cover to put on top of my hamper. Perfect way to hide an ugly tissue box. You can find it here.

NECKLACE HOLDER: I always have lots of necklaces laying around, so this cute little grey jewelry holder tree was the perfect addition to keep my jewelry organized. It’s available here.

That is everything we purchased to complete our makeover! I am so happy with how it turned out. On to the next one….

I am trying to do a bathroom remodel with a farmhouse theme. All the pictures I see have shiplap on the walls which I love, but contractors keep saying its bad for bathrooms. Any suggestions?

Hi Debbie! We have not any issues with it and I take steaming hot showers. So far so good here.

Thank you for posting all of these links and pictures. This is exactly what I’m trying to do with our beige tile bathroom that we had also reno about 13 years ago when we moved and the original bathroom was the same as your original bathroom. We couldn’t even move in right away because the bathroom was not usable. Anyway, I have a smaller space so not going to copycat, but love to know what is in my head will actually work! I do have a question, what color are your walls?

Thank you! I’m so glad this helped. I was worried that my concept wouldn’t work with my beige tile, but it turned out so much better than expected. The color is Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore.

Looks beautiful! I have very similar tile and am curious what paint you used on the walls?

    • Reply The Traveling Red January 27, 2021 at 11:16 pm

Thank you! It’s called Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore.

Have you considered other whites before deciding on Chantilly Lace? I am remodeling my bathroom with similar tile, so I am trying to decide on the right white. Thank you!

Thank you!! We just painted the shiplap white, we used Chantilly Lace from Benjamin Moore. All the tile was already in the bathroom, so I don’t remember the details. It’s over a decade old.
